Re: A-Rod makes more than the entire Marlins team
Overall is the key word in my previous post. Yeah there was one or 2 better in one category, one or 2 better in another category...but OVERALL Mattingly was the complete package. I never said any of the others didn't have injuries...but Mattingly's back never really healed.

I don't put much stock in that statement when you are trying to hold Keith Hernandez as the benchmark for the first basemen of his era.

im not
he was merely my first comparison
the benchmark is galarraga
with grace and johnny o being right behind
Re: A-Rod makes more than the entire Marlins team
If I took into account offense & defense both among 1B's of that era, I'm taking Olerud--you guys can split the rest. He was one of the more underrated hitters of the 90's.

my first choice would be palmiero for obvious reasons
he hit .300 and had power
johnny o is a great pick
underrated fielder
his career OBP is fantastic
Re: A-Rod makes more than the entire Marlins team
Olerud was solid overall. How about the Crime Dog? Fred McGriff was solid everywhere he played.

i actually forgot all about him somehow
493 HRs 1550 RBI .285 avg .377 OBP
much better than mattingly
Re: A-Rod makes more than the entire Marlins team
Hes more the benchmark than Galaragga I would think. The Big Cat was good, but wasn't he sort of mediocre for the first few years of his career in Montreal? Really flourished when he went mile high to the Rockies.
Re: A-Rod makes more than the entire Marlins team
big cat had some good years in montreal before he went to the rox......but somehow i completely forgot about freddie
freddie is def the benchmark firstbaseman......behind of course raffy
but since some think there are some "other issues" regarding raffy and mc gwire
throw them out
and freddie becomes the top guy
